Blanket Chests
Standard size is 36" long x 22" wide x 18" tall, up to 48" long x 24" wide x 22" tall. Peruse each items drop down list for additional sizes.
Most often our blanket chests are ordered with one internal sliding storage tray (Dovetailed).
Two soft close lid stays on each chest saves finger banging as well as keeps the lid in the open position.
Chests are lined with Aromatic Cedar, which may be replaced if necessary although it should keep producing the aroma for years if the chest is kept closed. Or applying Cedar Oil will refresh the crisp Cedar aroma and its properties.
The sliding internal tray may additionally be felt lined for delicate valuables. Dividers and locks may also be incorporated. Inquire about Laser engraving and Brass nameplates for the ultimate in personalization.
You may choose our standard flat side/end panels or raised panels are an option. Our flat panels are constructed of premium hardwood veneered plywood and I challenge other woodworkers to tell them apart from a glued solid panel.
Flat veneered panels create a stronger chest.
We offer raised solid wood profiled panels for that finer touch. Solid wood panels must float to enable seasonal wood movement, so are a less sturdy construction. Just as long lived if you don't drop it off the roof.
It used to be shocking to me how much furniture billed as "solid wood" is in fact constructed using hardwood plywood. Not that hardwood plywood is necessarily of lesser quality, but because it seemed misleading,a lazy way of jumping on the solid wood bandwagon without being entirely transparent. Then I discovered the legal definition of solid wood includes plywood manufactured from wood solids. The bottom line: Using hardwood plywood is a stronger construction and saves a bit of cost, however plywood panels are always flat and featureless. You can't create a profile into plywood without exposing the weird looking substrate under the top skin. Compare to raised solid wood panels: they must be floating and able to move with seasonal changes. And you can shape a nice profile into them and see the wood interacting with profile. And, there is an added cost because of the materials and the additional shop time to build it. Not the easiest to describe and so feel free to ask for more details.
